The magnificent Porta Marina of Cefalú with its gothic arc overlooking the sea, which makes it quite romantic, is the only surviving door of the four that once guaranteed the access to the city. Its walls, dating to the fifth century b.C and well-preserved until today, used to enclose the town giving to it the appearance of an unconquerable fortress.
There used to be four portals:
• Terra,
• Ossuna,
• Marina;
• Giudecca
The one which has remained intact, today, is exactly Porta Marina, also known as ‘Porta Pescara’.
The portal overlooks the colorful neighborhood of fishermen (quartiere dei pescatori), where they shot a scene of the renowned and touching movie of Tornatore: the scene of the outdoor cinema overlooking the sea during which the spectators watch a movie from a multitudes of boats cradled by the calm sea. From that small and beautiful small harbor, lighted by the evenings lights of the Norman town you can glimpse the portal: the turquoise sea touches the small beach where the boats are moored, while people bathe in the shade of the houses near the beach that look like cribs, and above all, in the shade of the great rock that overlooks the city.
Many tourists are used to take a photo of the small beach of the marina right through the arch of Porta Marina which is the frame. A portrait full of charm and colors, especially if you stop during the hours before sunset.
The sun falls on the sea and is filled with light, while, reaching the evening, the lights of the marina begin to light. Couples usually go there to escape from reality for a moment, to devote a moment to relax, to take a photo and keep a memory of the holiday.
Together with the medieval wash house, the Temple of Diana, the Cathedral, the Bastion of Capo Marchifava and many other places of the town, and in addition to the wide beaches, Porta Marina is one of the unmissable stops for those who want to enjoy a holiday or a weekend in Cefalù.
