Castelbuono: where nature walks with history

Castelbuono is a small village in the province of Palermo located on the slopes of the ‘hill Milocca’.

According to a Castelbuonese, describing the artistic and historical-architectural heritage of Castelbuono is not an easy task.

One of the most important monuments is definitely the castle, built by Francesco Ventimiglia in 1316 on an ancient Byzantine site around which the town developed.

From that moment, the Ventimiglia family decided to move to Castelbuono but, at the end of 1500, the local population was almost completely exterminated by two terrible epidemics.

The court decided to become a sort of residence of artists of considerable value, including Torquato Tasso, who contributed to the artistic and urban growth.

To see the Civic Museum, in which you can admire the artifacts related to the cult of Sant’Anna, interesting insights on the historical-architectural evolution of the urban fabric.

Castelbuono rises in an area of the Sicilian hinterland particularly rich from the naturalistic point of view.

The territory of the city is in fact part of the Madonie Park, a protected natural area that hosts many plant species present only in Sicily, can be visited on horseback, on foot or by bike.

Also famous is the Minà Palumbo Nature Museum, home to a rich collection of flora and fauna from the area. Even from the gastronomic point of view Castelbuono defends itself very well.

The most important traditional product of the village of Castelbuono is undoubtedly the Manna. Derived from the secretions obtained from the incision of the bark of the Orniello, or of the Amolleo of the Ash.

These are the only crops recognized in Italy and in the world are those of the Madonie valley in the municipalities of Castelbuono and Pollina.

In short, Castelbuono is the combination of taste, history and nature, a wonderful place where you can have fun and spend time in quality.
